Video tools either process on your device or upload to a server. The difference is usually buried in a settings screen, and it has more day-to-day consequence than most feature comparisons.

Why queues matter more than raw speed

A cloud renderer may finish a job faster than a phone once it starts. The relevant number, though, is time from tapping export to having the file — which includes uploading the source and waiting behind other jobs.

For a two-minute vertical video the upload alone can exceed the entire on-device render, especially on mobile data. And queue times are worst precisely when you most want to publish: evenings, weekends, and during whatever news cycle everyone is reacting to.

The privacy dimension

Cloud processing means your unpublished footage sits on someone else's infrastructure. For most content this is unremarkable. It stops being unremarkable for client work under NDA, anything with personal or medical information, unreleased announcements, or footage of people who did not consent to third-party processing.

If any of that describes your work, read the retention policy rather than assuming. The question to answer is how long files persist after processing and whether they are used for model training.

Where on-device runs out

On-device is not universally better. It struggles with hour-long sources, heavy multi-layer compositing, and older or thermally constrained phones — sustained rendering causes throttling, so a long export slows down partway through.
