Burned-In Captions vs Soft Subtitles: Choosing Per Platform
Burned-in captions — sometimes called open or hardcoded captions — are drawn into the video frames themselves. Soft subtitles are a separate data track the player renders on top. The choice determines what you can change later and who sees the text at all.

Per platform
Instagram Reels and TikTok
Burn in. Both platforms autoplay muted into a scrolling feed, and neither gives you dependable control over a soft track's appearance. Visibility by default is the whole game here.
YouTube (Shorts and long-form)
Both. Burn in for retention, upload a subtitle file for indexing and accessibility. This is the one platform where soft subtitles have real discovery value.
LinkedIn and X
Burn in. Caption support is inconsistent and viewers largely watch muted. Assume the soft track will not be turned on.
Broadcast, OTT and client delivery
Soft, usually as a sidecar file, because accessibility regulations and client specifications generally require selectable, standards-compliant captions. Burned-in text often fails delivery specs outright.
A workflow that covers both
- Keep the edited, uncaptioned master as your source of truth.
- Transcribe once and treat the transcript as an asset in its own right.
- Render a burned-in version for feed platforms.
- Export an SRT or VTT from the same transcript for YouTube and archives.
- Re-render from the master rather than editing the captioned file whenever anything changes.

They are better than no captions and worse than selectable ones, because the viewer cannot resize or disable them. Where you can offer both, do.
It requires a re-encode, which introduces some generational loss. At sensible bitrates this is not visible. Encoding repeatedly from already-encoded files is what causes noticeable degradation.
